Medicare Supplement / Medigap

A closer look at costs
Original Medicare leaves to you.

Medicare Supplement insurance can help pay certain out-of-pocket costs in Original Medicare. Start with the coverage design, then compare the policy and your eligibility.

First, make the distinction

A Supplement is not Medicare Advantage.

Built alongside Original Medicare.

Medigap is private insurance that works with Original Medicare. It is not an alternative way to receive Medicare benefits.

Drug coverage is a separate question. Review Part D options rather than assuming a new Medigap policy includes prescription coverage.

Compare benefits and the policy.

In most states, lettered Medigap plans have standardized basic benefits. State exceptions exist. Premiums, policy features and availability can still differ.

A familiar plan letter is the start of a comparison, not a personalized recommendation.

Your timing matters

Ask about enrollment rights before applying.

The federal Medigap Open Enrollment Period generally lasts six months, beginning the first month you are at least 65 and enrolled in Part B.

Outside a protected opportunity, an insurer may use medical underwriting. Guaranteed-issue rights and additional state protections may apply, so a review of your circumstances matters.

Do not assume Medicare’s annual plan-review period gives everyone a new Medigap open-enrollment right.
